Department Overview

Gas Operations is focused on ensuring the safe and reliable flow of natural gas to our customers. As a whole, Gas Operations is responsible for all aspects of PG&E's gas distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance, operations, construction, restoration and emergency response.

The Integrity Management organization's vision is to:

• Improve pipeline safety and system reliability with a goal of zero safety incidents.

• Promote a safety culture throughout all levels of the organization with an emphasis on improving learning from the past and anticipating the future.

• Apply integrity management principles on a system-wide basis while engaging our stakeholders, from local communities we operate in to our regulators, so they can understand and participate in reducing our risk.

• Support the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the transmission and distribution pipeline systems through the proactive use of asset knowledge, threat identification, knowledge of threat interaction, data integration and analytical tools to increase operational efficiency, improve system integrity and minimize safety risk to employees and the communities we operate in.

The Gas Transmission Integrity Management organization is responsible for evaluating the risk and threats to the integrity of the gas transmission system then developing and implementing a strategic integrity management plan for the entirety of the gas transmission pipeline assets.

Position Summary

This Direct Assessment (DA) Engineer position will work as a project engineer on a team of direct assessment engineers supporting the direct assessment inspection program and will implement external corrosion direct assessment (ECDA), internal corrosion direct assessment (ICDA) and stress corrosion cracking direct assessment (SCCDA) for gas transmission pipelines inspections. This position will report to the DA Supervising Engineer within the gas transmission integrity management program (TIMP). The DA project engineer is a critical position within the (TIMP) team to help ensure PG&E maintains safe and reliable pipelines which comply with federal regulations.

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned work location. The assigned work location will be within the PG&E Service Territory(San Ramon, CA).

Some travel may be involved, approximately 20% of work schedule depending on projects and meeting schedules.

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.​

A reasonable salary range is:​

Bay Area Minimum:$122,000

Bay Area Maximum:$194,000

This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs.

Qualifications-

Minimum:

• Bachelors’ degree in Engineering with emphasis on related/assigned discipline (i.e., mechanical, civil or electrical engineering, etc.)

• 3 years’ experience in gas transmission or distribution design, operations, and/or maintenance environment

Desired:

• NACE certified cathodic protection tester or higher

• BS or MS in an engineering field

• NACE certified coatings inspector or higher

• Professional Engineer registration

• Work experience related to natural gas transmission or natural gas distribution

• Pipeline cathodic protection system design and troubleshooting experience

• Pipeline coatings selection and application experience

• Corrosion failure analysis experience

• Knowledge of NACE SP0502, SP0206, SP0169 and ASME B31.8S, 2004.

• Ability to work well in a team environment as well as both an office and field setting

• Understanding of transmission and distribution maintenance practices

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the Direct Assessment [DA] Engineer is to support all of the DA program assessments as assigned. The engineer’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following items:

• Supports evaluation and application of new technology in order to optimize future developments in terms of cost and operability.

• Provides consultation on one or more specialized area related to pipeline integrity, corrosion control and cathodic protection, as well as provides consultation / guidance to other engineers and the gas organization.

• Independently performs routine engineering analysis and performs lead role in determining scope, schedule, budget and resources needed. Prepares cost and materials estimates for use in client bid proposals.

• Assists senior peers on more complex tests and projects, participating in planning, budgeting and testing.

• Begins to develop knowledge in other areas of specialty/discipline or continues to focus on one area and increases depth of knowledge.

• Completes multiple projects concurrently. Prepares tests and studies. Evaluates performance of parts, assemblies or systems under simulated operating conditions. Records results and makes recommendations based on findings.

• Collaborates with peers to prepare technical reports and specifications and to identify, define, and solve problems.

• May review test design of Associate level engineers to determine effectiveness and if objectives of project will be obtained.

• Develops test protocols, models, test technologies and analyzes data. May assist in the development of technical policies and procedures.

• Participates in identifying innovations and cost-reduction potential of new and existing technologies.

• May interface with clients regarding status of project or to collect more information. Ensures client expectations for project are met.
